LIDIA MATTICCHIO BASTIANICH is the author of twelve previous books and the Emmy award-wining host of Public Television's Lidia's Kitchen which also airs internationally in territories that include Mexico, Canada, the Middle East, Croatia, and the UK. She is also a judge on Masterchef Jr. Italy, and owns Felidia, Becco, and several other restaurants, and is a partner in the acclaimed Eataly in New York, Chicago, and Sao Paolo, Brazil. She lives on Long Island, New York. TANYA BASTIANICH MANUALI received her PhD in Renaissance art history from Oxford University, her MA from Syracuse University, and her BA from Georgetown University. She is the founder of an Italian food and wine tour company, Esperienze Italiane, the owner and Executive Producer at Tavola Productions, and manages the Lidia brand and food line. She co-authors cookbooks with her mother and brother and lives on Long Island in New York.

This cookbook doesn't have a lot of pictures or illustrations in it, but what it does have is a lot of good recipes. For those that are familiar with Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", they'll notice a number of similarities. Neither cookbook is filled with a bunch of pictures like today's cookbooks often are. And they both have that slightly yellowed paper that looks like it is from years back. So I think the design of this cookbook is to herald back to that look and feel of Julia Child's famous cookbook but for Italian cooking instead.To be honest, I haven't started cooking my way through the recipes yet. But I have cooked a lot and have made tons of good tasting dishes enough to know when I read a recipe to get an idea whether it is likely to be a great recipe or not. And from what I've skimmed through this cookbook several times, there are a bunch of great recipes in this cookbook. I plan to cook a lot from it.It would be nice if it had more pictures, but if you did that you'd either be making the cookbook a lot thicker or you'd be missing out on some great recipes. Buy the recipes, try them and I think you'll love them. Yes, there are some recipes in the cookbook that are with ingredients I don't typically cook with or like, but that's bound to be the case in any cookbook. And I think even many of those would taste quite good if I cook them (just gotta get over the mental block).But the reason I give this five stars is because of the sheer number of exceptionally good recipes that I think this cookbook has. A lot of the picture cookbooks will have 100-200 recipes or so and only a handful of those recipes are exceptional. I think Lidia has given us a cookbook full of exceptional recipes and the guidance to become a great Italian cook.I think time will prove this to be maybe her best cookbook ever and a classic that cooks turn to for generations to come.
Photos (of which there are none) help one see if the recipe is being done right. Her TV show does not give ingredient amounts. In short, There is no way to match the two. I find this very irresponsible. Tell me I don't have to pay for shipping and I will gladly will return it.
If you're in search of a book that has all those recipes you remember your nonna making and wish you could recreate, this is the book for you. All the classics from pasta e fagioli, lasagna and homemade meat sauce to lesser known Italian dishes, all of which contain, straightforward, easy to find ingredients. The directions, for the most part, are easy to follow without a ton of unnecessary steps, like Marcella Hazen's book. There's also a section describing all of the ingredients and a glossary of Italian terms. I personally would have preferred less of that and more recipes but all in all a great go-to Italian cookbook.
Wow what a book...informative, easy to read and if you follow her Vida's tv series it's great. No pictures, just loaded with information.
This book gorgeous, well-written and organized the way a true cook needs. It contains detailed information for food selection and kitchen needs and recipes that are indexed by food and name. That is only what makes it a useful cookbook. What makes it a masterpiece and an essential book to own, is that it is as if Lidia herself is with you while you have it open. You will want to keep it close to you and you will constantly refer back to it as you navigate the authentic Itslian style of cooking that Lidia so deftly explains.I am in progress of reading the book cover to cover and plan to make every single recipe season by season. Lidia's detailed instructions and guidelines are written in the voice we have come to know and love from listening to her programs for years. Her own passion for Italian cuisine is heard and felt throughout the book. She is there with you guiding your choices at the market and showing you how to turn them into delicious dishes that you and your family will relish. And she tells you about her own family history and how she came to know Italian cuisine by helping her Grandmother. It is an endearing, wonderful story.Lidia is unrivaled as an Italian master chef. You must have this book in your collection.
Outstanding recipes! Being part Italian myself, these recipes bring back lots of memories in my mom's kitchen. The book is filled with authentic and relatively easy recipes that you can make at home.....watching her show helps some as well. Absolutely delicious!
A wonderful cookbook that allowed me to cook delicious meals in the Italian style. I found the book itself to be a true recipe book that doesn't need glossy photographs that a photo stylist created with probably fake ingredients. If you want a picture, take one after you have created the dish. The recipes contain plenty of information to create the dish. Someone complained about the quality of the book. Really? The paper was soft, not glossy, and had a convenient ribbon marker. There was a great index to find the recipe you were looking for. A great companion cookbook for the show "Lidia's kitchen".
Such a great cookbook with interesting history of her beginnings, great recipes & easy to follow & has a lot of good information.
Well written, easy to use and understand, this book clearly describes and defines ingredients and methods of Italian cooking. It is now much easier to find most of the ingredients and to cook (mostly) like Lidia.
